Before it was established in 1959, the Parque Nacional Torres del Paine was part of a large sheep estancia. This beautiful area is still recovering from the overexploitation of its pastures, forests, and wildlife. It is home to large and happily growing herds of guanaco (similar to llamas), flocks of flightless ostrich-like birds called ñandú, condors, and many other species. Since 1978 the park has been part of the United Nations World Biosphere Reserve system. A wonderful way to visit this area of geographical wonders is on the back of one of the strong Patagonian horses.
