A view of the beautiful Elqui Valley in northern Chile

The Elqui Valley is known for its breathtaking scenery, clear skies, vineyards, orchards, and charming villages such as La Serena. Locate La Serena on a map of Chile. Another interesting rural town in this area is Vicuña, the birthplace of the famous Chilean poet Gabriela Mistral (1889–1957). A woman who faced great obstacles and suffered great tragedies, Mistral started her career as an elementary school teacher. She also began to write poetry, much about children, at an early age. In 1945 she won the Nobel Prize for Literature.

In addition to being a great literary figure, she was a well-known diplomat. She worked at the League of Nations and served as a Chilean consul in Naples, Madrid, and Lisbon. She also taught her beloved language and literature in the United States at Columbia University, Middlebury College, Vassar College, and the University of Puerto Rico.
