The pineapple is native to Paraguay and to southern Brazil. The indigenous populations spread the pineapple throughout South and Central America as well as the West Indies. European explorers first encountered the fruit on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe and took it back to Spain. Spanish explorers also introduced the pineapple to the Philippines, and they may have taken it to Hawaii and to Guam in the sixteenth century.
