Ruins of Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is located nearly 8,000 feet above sea level. This Incan estate, built in the mid-fifteenth century, was mysteriously abandoned at the time of the Spanish conquest and encountered by Hiram Bingham in 1911. The city’s buildings are constructed from stones cut so precisely that they fit together without mortar. Machu Picchu remains one of the most tangible and most significant legacies of the Incan civilization.
