The church of Suchitoto
The name Suchitoto comes from the indigenous náhuatl language. It means “place of birds and flowers.” The capital city, San Salvador, was originally founded in 1528 where Suchitoto is today, but it was reconstructed in 1545 in its present location. Suchitoto’s colonial past is evident in its cobblestone streets lined with colorful, colonial buildings. Close to Suchitoto is the Cerrón Grande Hydroelectric Dam, making the area a popular day trip from San Salvador.
