Beautiful Lake Atitlán lies at the foot of three dormant volcanoes—San Pedro, Tolimán, and Atitlán. Panajachel is the main city on the lake, and it has become quite a tourist attraction and weekend retreat for the residents of Guatemala City. There are other communities around the lake and many are inhabited by indigenous groups. Several of these communities are named for the apostles: San Lucas, San Pablo, San Pedro, and Santiago.
