A view of the colonial city of Antigua, the former capital of Guatamala

Antigua is a picturesque town surrounded by volcanoes and known for its many colonial buildings. The Arco de Santa Catalina is one of its famous monuments. On a clear day, one can see the Volcán Agua from beneath the arch, which was built at the end of the seventeenth century and reconstructed after the earthquake of 1773. It originally functioned as a bridge used by the cloistered nuns to pass from one wing of their convent to the other without having to appear on the street.
