Granada, Nicaragua, is becoming a major international tourist destination! Nestled at the foot of the volcano Mombacho on the northwest shore of Lake Nicaragua, Granada is not only the oldest colonial city in Central America—it was founded in 1524—but it is also one of the most beautiful. Granada’s appeal has made it one of the fastest growing tourist destinations in Nicaragua.

Founded by Francisco Hernández de Córdoba and named for his home in Spain, Granada is undoubtedly a city full of charm and character. Exquisite examples of Spanish colonial architecture are plentiful in Granada, and you’ll also see lovely Baroque and Renaissance architecture. The abundance of horse-drawn carriages in the city center add to the city’s charm.

Even though it is the fourth-largest city in Nicaragua, Granada has more of a feel of a delightful town. Strolling from the historic Central Park to the waterfront of Lake Nicaragua along the famous Calle La Calzada, one can truly appreciate the personality of Granada. It is the perfect city to visit for anyone hoping to capture a vision of life in colonial times.
